Bodsey’s Snippets:
Lee Walker’s remarkable 22 points against Medway on Saturday 11th October 2008 doesn’t come very often. A first for him, he joined just three other Villagers who had done it, one of them Dave Hughes twice, and only two people have scored more points in a match for the club, one of those, Ed De Lucy, three times and the current record holder.
Ed’s record was set on 2nd October 1994 against Darenth Valley IVs. His 36 points in a match are a record comprising 2 tries and 13 conversions (again the record for a match) and he did not even take all the kicks. From 18 tries, 14 were converted another club record. This match was memorable for Paul Tucker’s 5 tries and a hat trick from a front row forward, Kev Turner.
The first time the 22-point mark was hit was on 14th March 1981 when John Dennison scored a try and kicked 9 conversions against Sittingbourne IV. Dave Hughes then managed it twice; the first on 24th February 1990 against the Exiles with a hat trick of tries and 5 conversions and secondly on 11th March 1995 against Tonbridge IIIs with 2 tries and 6 conversions.
Ed De Lucy hit 22 on 7th November 1998 against Aylesford IIIs also with 2 tries and 6 conversions and he scored 23 points against Old Gravesendian IIIs on 23rd January 1999 with a try and 9 conversions (equal third for most conversions in one match). On 18th October 1997 he scored 24 points against STC Greenwich with 2 tries, 2 penalties and 4 conversions.
New kid on the block, fly half Harry Carden weighed in with 22 points in the league match with Tunbridge Wells IIIs on 21st February 2009. His haul of 2 tries, 2 penalties and 3 conversions could have been extended to 24 if another conversion which we were sure went over was given and to 29 if he had grounded the ball for a hat trick! In the next league match against Tonbridge Juddian IVs on 7th March 2009, he scored 25 points with 2 tries, a penalty and six out of six conversions in gusty conditions. He hit another 22 against Edenbridge in the Jubilee Cup on 11 April 2009 with 11 conversions (second most in a match).
The second biggest hitter points wise was John Whibley on 25th September 1999 against Ashford IV with 27 made up from a hat trick of tries and 6 conversions. Also in that match Danny Baker returned 16 points with 2 tries and 3 conversions!
